我们学习英语，能学会所有的因素和发音规则，也有可能掌握所有的语法和规则，但要学会所有的单词是无法做到的。且不说外语学习者。即便把英语作为母语使用的人也难以达到这一目标。其实我们学习汉语也是如此。我相信，没有一个中国人敢说他学会了所有汉字。既然我们学不会所有的单词，那么就要把有限的时间用在学习最有用的单词上。如对我们所学的汉字稍作分析，就会发现有的字我们只是认识，但在说话行文中很少运用，但有些字就没有这样的差别，看得懂，听得明，说得出，用的上。前一类字，称为消极或接受性单词
（receptive vocabulary）,后一类称为积极或表达性单词（productive vocabulary）。
